Following the success of Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, Capcom is reportedly promising to vamp up Nintendo Switch support moving forward.

While Ultra Street Fighter II didn't receive the warmest welcome from critics with an aggregate score of 66 on OpenCritic, Switch owners apparently didn't mind. Takashi Mochizuki‏, a technology reporter for the Wall Street Journal, reported in a tweet that Ultra Street Fighter II sold about 450,000 units, exceeding Capcom's expectations for the port.

In Mochizuki‏'s tweet, he went on to say that Capcom is "starting to prepare" more Switch-version titles. However, it's impossible to tell what Capcom means by this statement, at least for now.

While this could very well mean that the publisher will soon start developing brand new games for the Switch, the wording also leaves the door open for more ports to the Switch similar to Street Fighter II. It could also mean that Capcom will start working to bring newer titles like Resident Evil 7 to the Switch. Only time will tell.

Who knows? Maybe Capcom will go old school and just keep releasing different versions of Street Fighter II on the Switch.

In a recent press release from Capcom's investor relations department, the company cited Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, which released in May, as a pleasant surprise for the publisher. The release says the game "made an excellent start and proved to be a smash hit." It also cites Resident Evil 7 and Monster Hunter XX as substantial contributors to the most recent quarter's revenue for the company.

Quick Take

One thing that we should keep in mind when talking about game sales on the Switch is its relative lack of games thus far. Nintendo released a console that seems to have blown away their expectations, and the people who have managed to get their hands on a Switch are desperate to play anything on it. While I'm sure Switch owners are delighted to hear that Capcom is going to continue to support the console, I'm worried that Capcom may go all in on the Switch now, only to find the environment completely shifted a few years from now and their initial strategy null and void.
