Capcom has apparently filed a trademark in the U.S for the name Monster Hunter: World.

The trademark, found on uspto.gov, was first spotted on NeoGaf. The trademark also only affects the United States. It was apparently filed less than a week ago on June 5th, 2017.

No other information on Monster Hunter: World has been made at this time, other than a title. Speculation, of course, is running rampant as to what the title may be referring to.

The most prevalent theory at the moment believes it is the name for the Monster Hunter MMO, which has been a China only game developed and maintained by MMO company Tencent since 2015. Capcom is listed as the publisher for the MMO, and while no official Western release has been made, several English translations have been made for the game for a western audience. It is possible that Capcom is planning to release Monster Hunter: World as an MMO for the West.

Another possible candidate would be the American name for Monster Hunter: Double Cross. Double Cross, or XX, was revealed to have a cross-play function between the already released 3DS version, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch version. Both games are also in Japan only at this time, but many believe an announcement by Capcom will confirm that Monster Hunter: Double Cross will be coming to the West soon.

Monster Hunter is one of the most popular I.P's in Capcom's library, selling over 38 million units worldwide since the series back in 2004. In Japan, Monster Hunter is one of the most popular RPG series on the market. Several games in the series have become best sellers, in particular, Monster Hunter Tri for the Nintendo Wii, which was the fastest selling third party game for the system in Japan.
