The latest game in the long-running Call of Duty franchise, Call of Duty: WW2, released a few weeks ago on November 3rd. Since then, anyone playing the online portion of the game has unknowingly received double experience points for all of their actions. According to Eurogamer, this wasn't some developer secret either. Sledgehammer launched the game in double XP mode without realizing it.

This past weekend was the first official double experience weekend, where Sledgehammer realized their mistake. When activating the event on Thursday, players were getting 3x experience for a short while. Upon realizing this, Sledgehammer put players back to double experience for the weekend. They put players back to normal 1x experience gain this Monday - the first time since launch.

Sledgehammer co-founder Michael Condrey revealed this information on Reddit:

We launched with 2XP active, unintentionally. Everyone was getting 2XP since 11/3 and up until we made the playlist change late Thursday night, which effectively launched 3XP.

Come Monday, when we turn off the XP bonus, it will effectively revert to what we should have had at launch (aka 1XP).

So early players, you got a huge head start.

Reddit users are not happy with this change. Some are accusing Sledgehammer of lowering XP to extend longevity. Others are saying the double experience barely felt fast enough, and that single experience will make the grind long and tedious.

Quick Take

I can see why this is frustrating players - especially with how long it's been going on. If the grind is as long as they're saying, maybe Sledgehammer should consider balancing out the experience output. I'm surprised such a thing went unnoticed by the devs, but hopefully, they can remedy it.
