Treyarch had quietly disabled Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 split-screen support in the last week. It took a while for people to notice, but they eventually did and were baffled — why would a core component of local multiplayer be deactivated without any warning? Thankfully, the devs have finally stepped in with a response to this mysterious issue.
Eurogamer reports that fans first started noticing the lack of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 split-screen a few days ago, taking their complaints to the game's official subreddit in the hopes of getting an answer from the developers. Many comments expressed frustration at the apparent silence of the developers at the removal of this feature. After a short time, representatives from the developer responded regarding the issue.
"Thank you all for the tags!" Treyarch developer /u/FoxhoundFPS said on the game's official subreddit. "I've reached out to the team and was informed that we have temporarily disabled split screen as we evaluate some known issues. We'll share updates in the future after investigating further."
A subsequent comment cleared things up a little more.
"The team is aware of an item entitlement issue for this Death Effect for some users and should have it fixed in an upcoming update." the comment stated. "Will update accordingly as we investigate."
There's currently no word on when Black Ops 4 split-screen will return or when the fix will be pushed live and the feature re-enabled. Previously, it was available for two players in competitive games and up to four players in the Zombies game mode. For now, all we can do is keep patient in the hopes that Treyarch can get a fix out the door quickly. In the meantime, there's always online multiplayer!
