Call of Duty Online is currently a China-only title that is set to be published sometime this year, but that shouldn't stop anyone from enjoying this new live-action trailer starring Chris Evans.
Coming out of no-where, this trailer for Call of Duty Online acts (and pretty much looks) like an action movie straight out of the 80's. For some reason Chris Evans stars in this bombastic live-action trailer, which of course features machine guns, one-liners and many explosions to maximize the amount of cheese. The trailer itself begins with a few average looking people going into an elevator and being normal selfie taking citizens, until all mayhem breaks loose and the setting rapidly devolves into a warzone. The group then quickly finds themselves surrounded and at the end of their rope until Chris Evans arrives in the nick of time to save the day, quipping "you can thank me later," which then leads into the best one-liner in the entire trailer: "does he think he is a Hollywood action hero or something?"
Indeed.
This is not the first time that Activision has resorted to casting big names to promote their Call of Duty franchise. Sam Worthington, Jonah Hill and Dwight Howard were in the Modern Warfare 3 trailer, Robert Downey Jr. briefly appeared in the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 trailer, and finally Megan Fox also appeared in the Call of Duty Ghosts trailer. Clearly, this is not a new strategy for Activision, but there is also a few interesting questions to consider: why in fact does Activision feel the need to cast these big names in order to promote their games? Shouldn't they be able to stand on their own as interactive experiences? Perhaps Activision just wants to appeal to a more broad fan-base, but older Call of Duty games did not have live-action trailers and they still sold exceptionally well, so why the recent trend?
Overly deep thinking aside, Call of Duty Online's live-action trailer is still a fun watch, and it has been linked below for your viewing pleasure.
