Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is in development and will launch worldwide October 12th, according to publisher Activision.

This announcement comes after the game was teased by professional basketball player James Harden, who attended a recent game in full camouflage and a cap. The cap sported an "IIII" logo reminiscent of the Black Ops series' distinctive Roman numerals.

In accordance with the long-running shooter series' yearly release schedule, it's developer Treyarch's turn to handle making the game after Sledgehammer Games' 2017 effort Call of Duty: WWIIBlack Ops IIII will be the first Call of Duty title released in October since 2005's Call of Duty 2, which was released on October 26th of that year.

Fans can expect more information about Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII on May 17th, when Activision and Treyarch will be hosting a "Community Reveal Event". A message on the official Call of Duty website invites fans to "forget what you know" in reference to Black Ops IIII. Right now, that's all the official website has about the game, but it's likely more will be added in the run-up to the reveal event, as well as afterward.

It's not currently clear why Activision and Treyarch have opted for "IIII" instead of the more common modern usage in Roman numerals of "IV". Eurogamer did an interesting piece, whereupon contacting the British Museum it was revealed both IV and IIII were used, with IV coming into heavier usage later on and into the modern day when discussing Roman numerals, perhaps in part because it is more distinctive.

The first Call of Duty: Black Ops was released back in 2010, serving as a sequel to 2008's World at War. The series continued in 2012 and 2015 with Black Ops II and III respectively. 2015's Black Ops III is still being updated, having received a new Infected game mode recently as well as a new Redwood Snow map.
