The Borderlands 3 Worldwide Gameplay Reveal is happening right now, and you can watch the frantic shootin’-‘n-lootin’ it on Twitch and YouTube. The event had quite a bit leading up to it, with a solid media presence, and Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford introducing the event, though this time he did it without a drawn-out magic trick. What he did was tell the audience:
“We’re gonna do some kickass campaign DLC. And I’m sure we’re going to do all kinds of fun customizations like heads and skins, but we’re not doing any of that free-to-play junk. There’s not going to be any microtransactions, there’s not going to be any of that nonsense.”
However, the game will have cosmetic microtransactions. Paul Sage, Creative Director at Gearbox Software went on to explain to a GameInformer reporter: “We’re selling cosmetic items, but we’re not going to nickel and dime players. DLC will come down the line, but the game won’t have anything excessive.” Although the Gearbox’s vision for Borderlands has always been to keep purchasable loot boxes out of the franchise and avoid pay-to-win, the opportunity to sell cosmetic items probably seems too tempting to turn down, especially with the 88% profit share that comes as a timed Epic Games Store exclusive.
On Twitter, Randy Pitchford swiftly responded to the GameInformer reporting as a “shitty clickbait headline.” He elaborated that he felt his statement was clear that he meant no premium currency or pay-to-win, but as you can see in the original quote he quite clearly states no microtransactions without any qualifications or clarity on the cosmetics.
Come on guys – shitty clickbait headline. Literally seconds before I said that, I made it very clear we’re going to do more cosmetic stuff like we did in Borderlands 2. You know I was talking about premium currency and loot boxes kind of stuff NOT being in our game.
