It’s official: the Wii U version for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night has been canceled. The cancellation was announced as an update on the game’s Kickstarter campaign page.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a Metroidvania created by a team headed by Koji Igarashi, a game developer who has experience on over a dozen Castlevania titles. The Kickstarter campaign was very successful, earning over 11 times the campaign goal of $500,000 at the close of the campaign in June of 2015. The game was stated to be coming out for multiple platforms including all three major consoles of the time, the PlayStation Vita, and digitally for PC on Steam and GOG.

A year and a half later, the game’s release was delayed until 2018. When a Nintendo Switch version was announced, some wondered whether or not it would render the Wii U version redundant. Koji Igarashi had stated in an interview that the development team was undecided how to move forward with the Wii U version considering the release of the Nintendo Switch.

Moving forward, any backers who had previously selected the Wii U version in the Backer Survey will be getting the Nintendo Switch version instead. Alternatively, backers can return to the survey they previously filled out and elect to receive the game on either the PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or PlayStation Vita instead.Backers seeking a refund must meet several criteria. They must have filed out the backer survey previously and selected the Wii U version, they must have backed the campaign at the Unlimited tier ($28-$500),

Backers seeking a refund must meet several criteria:

  • filled out the backer survey previously and selected the Wii U version
  • backed the campaign at the Unlimited tier ($28-$500)
  • be able to receive funds via Paypal
  • submit a refund request before April 20, 2017

If there are any problems, the campaign update provides backers with ways to contact the development team for issues relating to the survey or for refund requests.

What do you think of the Wii U version of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night being canceled? Do you think this is a wise move considering the release of the Nintendo Switch or do you feel that the developers should have made a Wii U version anyway? Backers: will you be switching to playing the game on another platform or will you be applying for a refund? Let us know in the comments below!

I've had a controller in my hand since I was 4 and I haven't stopped gaming since. CCGs, Tabletop Games, Pen & Paper RPGs - I've tried a whole bunch of stuff over the years and I'm always looking to try more!
