World of Warcraft Classic Servers

Today, Blizzard Entertainment announced that World of Warcraft Classic servers would be arriving for their MMORPG title, World of Warcraft.

This comes in the wake of Nostalrius, an extremely popular private server, being shuttered last year. A few weeks later, Blizzard floated the idea of Pristine servers, which would turn off all leveling acceleration such as "character transfers, heirloom gear, character boosts, Recruit-A-Friend bonuses, WoW Token, and access to cross realm zones, as well as group finder."

At the time, Community Manager Nethaera stated that Blizzard Entertainment was unsure whether a clean slate was something that that would "appeal" to the wider community, but that it was still an "open topic" for more discussion.

A year and a half later, it seems like the Blizzard has finally listened to the communities' pleas. "This is something that we have just continued to hear from the community," J. Allen Brack, Blizzard's senior vice president and executive producer told PC Gamer.

The biggest problem for Blizzard wasn't getting it up and running, but to actually have it playable at a standard modern gamer's have come to expect. They worked at it for a long time to no success, but their "breakthrough" came when they "think" found a way to run Classic servers on "modern" technology.

While questions remain about how the team will "tackle" Classic servers, a few things remain clear: there won't be cross-realm servers, Looking For Raid, and Dungeon Finder automatic party matchmaking. However, in order to answer these lingering questions, Blizzard is hiring an "entirely separate team" in order to see Classic servers come life and maintained.

There isn't a release date as of yet, but it's coming eventually. Stay tuned for more information as it comes.

Quick Take

Thank the Titans. The Classic Server community has been filled with scammers from the very beginning, so I feel nothing but schadenfreude as Blizzard makes one of their most long-awaited announcements ever, in a move that may honestly overshadow their newest expansion announcement. Personally, a lot of us here at TechRaptor are ready to lose our free time to Classic WoW once again, although I'm not sure if I will be able to equal my twelve-hour record set by twelve-year-old-mini-me. I'll find out... soon enough.

A very unflattering picture of my tired face.
