You can now play Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's Blackout free on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. This free version will include pretty much everything in the game mode that paid players can have access to, although it obviously won't include the rest of the goodies in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The launch of a Blackout free trial period also happens to come at a somewhat unfortunate time for their competition as Apex Legends is currently down due to a bug resetting players' accounts.

For those who are not in the know, Blackout is Call of Duty's first serious go at doing a battle royale game mode. It features most of the staples of the genre including deploying into the combat zone by air, weapon pickups, and a hell of a lot of chaos. Blackout also includes a number of vehicles and more gadgets than a spy museum. The free version of Black Ops 4's Blackout will see free players seamlessly matchmade with paid players on all three platforms. Solo, duo, and quad queues will be available. Both the original Blackout map along with the brand-new Alcatraz map will be available according to a press release from the publisher. As with many limited-time free gameplay events, any progress made by free players from now until the end date of April 30, 2019, will be retained should they choose to purchase the game.

With Apex Legends down and Blackout free, now's as good a time as any to try out Call of Duty's first crack at the battle royale genre. You can get the game digitally for PC at the Blizzard Store, for the PlayStation 4 at the PlayStation Store, and for the Xbox One at the Microsoft Store. The free trial period for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Blackout ends on April 30, 2019.

Will you play the Blackout free edition before April 30th or are you not really interested in the game? Do you think the mode should go free permanently? What's your favorite battle royale these days? Let us know in the comments below!
