FPS fanatics will be sad to hear about Blacklight Retribution shutting down on PC this March. The free-to-play first-person shooter had a solid run of 7 years, but developer Hardsuit Labs has had to come to the decision to end their support for the game as they move on to focusing on their next project.

The news about Blacklight Retribution shutting down was announced on the game's official subreddit by the dev team. To start, all of the items in the in-game shop have been made available completely for free. If you've ever been curious about the game, now's the time to play it. You'll have until March 11, 2019, to play the game. After that, the PC servers shut down for good.

One of the items of interest regarding the shutdown is that the PlayStation 4 version of the game will continue to operate. That particular version uses peer-to-peer connections so it doesn't rely on any servers run by Hardsuit Labs. Several Redditors inquired about the possibility of bringing this same functionality over to the PC version, but the dev team responded that they just don't have the resources to get the work done needed to make this change happen. Many of the game's fans have also expressed some dissatisfaction with how the game's development and management was handled and they hope that Hardsuit Labs has learned from this experience.

As for what's next for Hardsuit, Paradox acquired one-third of the company in early 2018 and intends to effectively remain a silent partner for now. They are still hard at work on a mysterious unannounced project. If you're down for a bit of nostalgia, you'll be able to play Blacklight Retribution for free on Steam until the servers shut down on March 11, 2019.
