The beta period for Black Ops 4's Blackout mode has ended. Before it came to an end, Treyarch extended it an extra two hours past its original closing time and increased the player count to 100. The player count had started at 80, before being raised to 88. Finally, it ended at 100 players.

100 players has become the norm for the genre. The two giants of the Battle Royale scene PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and Fortnite both feature this as the max number of players in a game. Naturally, Treyarch will be satisfied to have hit this milestone, especially on consoles where a consistent performance is key, but they've said they have experimented with up to 115 players. Treyarch did not confirm whether this player count will carry over when Black Ops 4 launches next month.

They also added a number of changes and tweaks before the beta ended. The amount of damage players receive from being outside the collapse saw an increase. Furthermore, the cargo plane that brings in supplies drops will be harder to take down. It will have more health and will not take damage from bullets. The wingsuit also saw some changes. Players can now no longer gain altitude at high speed, and Treyarch has slightly increased how long it takes to pull up from a steep dive.

The developer also implemented a number of fixes and bug squashes. Various issues with collision were fixed, as well as with the killcam. Bugs that would make players get stuck on the map were fixed, and a bug that made multiple players spawn in the same spot in the Staging Area was resolved.

Quick Take

I played a fair bit of the beta and enjoyed my time with it. The map did feel a little too large for 88 players, however, and there were sometimes prolonged periods of inaction that would make some games a little dull. An increase to 100 players seems like a smart choice, assuming the console versions can keep the frame rate up.
