With Injustice 2's May release date creeping ever closer, NetherRealm Studios has unveiled yet another super-powered fighter for its roster. This time around, the combatant in question is Dinah Laurel Lance, a motorcycle-riding, sonic-screeching, villain-punching heroine most commonly known by her alias of Black Canary.

While she may not be the most popular pick for a fighter (I'm shocked that her love interest Green Arrow hasn't been confirmed yet), her inclusion comes as no surprise. NetherRealm has had experience with characters like her in their own Mortal Kombat franchise with Sindel; another character who can emit super-powered screams that can deal heavy damage to their opponents. Of course, as the trailer has demonstrated, she has a few more tricks up her sleeve.

Not only does she use her Canary's Cry and martial arts to lay the smackdown on fellow newcomers Blue Beetle, Atrocitus, and Deadshot, but she can also lob in a few sonic-based stun grenades for good measure. Keen-eyed viewers have noted her moveset's similarity to that of fellow female fighter Harley Quinn, but until any more footage is released, it will be hard to tell just how alike they are.

Injustice 2 releases for Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on May 16th.

Quick Take

While I won't pretend Black Canary is among my favorite DC gals (Please NetherRealm, bring back Zatanna), I'm glad to see more non-Batman characters join the fray. While I didn't mind the lineup for the first Injustice, I must concede that it was a little too Bat-centric for a game about the DC Universe at war. What I Hope is that this game really goes "out there" for some picks. Throw in Etrigan! Or Ragman! Or Hitman! Or a New God! Or one of the Atomic Knights! Or the android US marine on the cover of Weird War Tales! It never hurts to go a little crazy as far as crossovers are concerned.
