In a post on the game’s official website, Edmund McMillen has detailed a new game mode to be added to The Binding of Issac: Rebirth in its upcoming Afterbirth update. Dubbed “Greed” mode, this take on mob rush-style gameplay will take out quite a few of the random elements that the game is known for. McMillen detailed that he felt that it was hard to pull off some of the more complex item combinations in the base game, and this new mode will allow more player choice while still preserving the elements that make the game popular.

Every floor in Greed mode will be the same layout, with only a few rooms to gain rewards. A set number of random enemy mobs will spawn in on each floor and only drop money when they’re defeated. At any point, the player can hit a stop button in the center of the room, at which point they can navigate to the shop and purchase power-ups and keys with the money they earn from fallen foes. The navigation and exploration of the main game is gone, making this purely focused on combat and finding a loadout of powers that can wipe the floor with your opponents.

There are still a few details yet to be revealed about the new mode, including how bosses will factor into the equation, as well as the more specific distribution of items and the way to unlock some of the bonus rooms. This information will come later, along with news about when exactly in 2015 players will get to plunder the depths of the basement once more.
