beholder - short film still

Beholder, a dystopian game where a landlord must spy on their tenants in an authoritarian regime, will be getting a short film from the same team behind the Papers, Please movie according to a Facebook post and press release from Kinodom Productions.

If you haven't had the chance to play Beholder, it may be well worth checking out.  While our review considered its heavy scripting a downside, it praised its simple mechanics and engaging consequences system as positives. The game has you playing a landlord who is ostensibly trying to get people to move into their apartment building, but there's a twist - your job is to actually spy on the residents thanks to the orders from an authoritarian regime.

Russia-based Kinodom Productions will be adapting Beholder to the silver screen, just as they did with their film interpretation of Papers, Please (as a half-Russian myself, I'm certainly familiar with how well my people understands authoritarian surveillance states.) It will be a silent film so as to stay thematically consistent with the game it's based on.

Principal photography is nearly complete and the team is making the transition to post-production. We don't yet have a release date or information on the platforms where you'll be able to watch it, nor do we know whether it will be free or a one-time purchase.

We previewed the upcoming sequel to the Beholder game which is set to release sometime in the second half of 2018. For the moment, you can add the sequel to your wishlist on Steam. If you don't yet own the first title in the franchise, you can pick it up on Steam, the Humble Store, or GOG for $9.99 or your regional equivalent.
