Battlefield 1 Open Beta

Save the date - EA and DICE have confirmed that the Battlefield 1 Open Beta will commence on the 31st of August, on the Xbox One, PS4, and PC (via Origin).

Announced via the Battlefield blog and by official press release, the Open Beta will debut the new Sinai Desert map, and will offer players the fan-favourite modes of Conquest and Rush. Rush will support up to 24 players on a single map, whereas the Conquest mode offers the Battlefield franchise's signature 64 players. The much anticipated horse cavalry will also be playable, as will the new Elite classes of Sentry, Tank Hunter, and Flame Trooper. Oh, and there's a massive armored tank-train.

The Armored Train Behemoth (presumably "Thomas the Death Engine" wasn't available) will also be player-controlled - though how controllable a literally on-rails vehicle will actually be is open to question. Functioning as a crutch for the losing team on Conquest, the Armored Train will support multiple explosive gunpoints, and will offer a moving spawn point for its team. Judging by the above trailer, the train will also have room to maneuver, since desert combat looks highly mobile. Gun and sword-wielding cavalry clash with jeeps and tanks, while biplane dogfights circle overhead. Infantry lovers look to be able to catch a break away from the horses and engines in the narrow confines of Bir el Mazar village, in an area that's likely to become a favourite with tank-hunters and head-hunters alike.

And through it all, the train of death chugs on.

Eligibility for 24 hours of early access to the Open Beta is available through the Battlefield Insider newsletter. But be quick - sign ups for early access eligibility end today (August 21st).

Battlefield 1 will be launching worldwide on October 21st, with October 18th early access for adopters of the Early Enlister Deluxe Edition. EA Access and Origin Access subscribers will also get early access to Battlefield 1 as part of an early trial (likely a ten hour demo) that kicks off October 13th.
