The Battle for Wesnoth is an open-source game that has been in development for over a decade, and is easily one of best turn-based strategy games you can find on PC. With the release of a major update that has been in the works for quite some time, now is a great opportunity to give this game a try.

To sum it up nicely, the new patch for The Battle for Wesnoth includes "a completely revamped interface, a new multiplayer faction, dozens of new portraits, updated unit animations, hundreds of bug fixes, and a vastly improved map editor."

Quite a patch overall, but what is most interesting is the fact that this game is now in its 11th year, and is still receiving updates. Have no fear of downloading a game that will be left by the wayside, because the people making this game are clearly in it for the long haul.

In terms of features and content, The Battle for Wesnoth boasts an active multiplayer and modding scene, and 15 single-player campaigns. For those wondering, yes, there is also the option for hosting your own LAN server, as well as the ability to make your own campaigns via the newly redesigned map editor.

There is also a tutorial for those who want to familiarize themselves with both the genre and the game itself, which is surprisingly professional and in-depth.

Getting started in The Battle for Wesnoth.

Moving back to the update, the newly introduced multiplayer-only Khalifate faction are notable for having no magic users, as they instead specialize "in using terrain features to coordinate attacks at dawn or dusk." For those who want a different experience, it looks as though the Khalifate faction could definitely offer some interesting scenarios.

Speaking of scenarios, there are also many small and subtle changes made to the Wesnoth's campaigns, which have "received various visual and gameplay improvements. " These improvements range from new portraits, as mentioned earlier, to re-balancing campaign missions so that there are less difficultly jumps. An added feature allows players to choose a lower difficulty setting mid-campaign, which is good, as players no longer have to restart their campaign in order to change the difficulty.
