Axiom Verge

In a recent press release by developer Tom Happ, it was announced that Axiom Verge will make its debut on Microsoft's Xbox One console and the Nintendo eShop for the WiiU later this year.

Beyond the later this year, there's no time frame given for the ports to the Xbox One and WiiU. Whether this game will ship with any new features or tweaks is as of yet also a mystery.

In case you didn't know, Axiom Verge is a retro-inspired action platformer that takes its inspiration from some of the greats like Metroid, Contra and the more modern Metroidvania games in recent memory. The title is already available on the PlayStation 4 (March 31, 2015) and PC (May 14, 2015) platforms and has been since since last year. The game was a critical success with reviewers giving high scores across the board and fans giving lots of praise with 95% of steam reviews being positive.

What's more impressive is the fact that the entire game was programmed, animated and created by one person, Tom Happ. This game follows in the footsteps of one-person developers such as Markus "Notch" Persson, who was the programmer and creator of Minecraft.

Axiom Verge was nominated for "Best Independent Game of 2015" at The Game Awards last year but lost to Rocket League.

Quick Take

I did play Axiom Verge a few times at my mates house and for the odd amount of hours I did experience the game, it was quite punishing (for me anyway's) but also fun to play. The game makes good use of multiple different powerups and weapons but I did get tired of the backtracking the game makes you do but it had to be done or you can't progress and/or get all the needed items for certain sections of the map and so on. If the game ends up going on sale for a cheap enough price, I might just pick it up.
