Job listings from Square Enix have revealed the gameplay system and inclusion of online elements for The Avengers Project.

Announced earlier this year, The Avengers Project is a superhero-filled game featuring known heroes from the Marvel universe. The team behind Tomb Raider and Deus Ex are collaborating on the game. The game garnered the interest of many despite the lack of information on gameplay systems, but the recent job listings have helped shed some light on the matter.

Crystal Dynamic’s job listing for the combat systems designer position states that it is recruiting for more people to be part of Redwood City studio’s “incredibly talented Design team working on the ‘Avengers Project.’” The combat systems designer is expected to work on a “3rd person cover based action adventure game.”

Other positions don't mention The Avengers Project but shed light on the new studios work on this, and any other projects they are working on. The recruitment page for lead level designer hints about the project having "various game modes and campaigns." Additionally, there may also be multiplayer features. The lead level designer is tasked to work on "cutting-edge online experiences." Meanwhile, the network engineer will work on “vast sections” of the “multiplayer game engine.”

More job positions are listed on Crystal Dynamics’ official website but barely shed more light on The Avengers Project’s gameplay systems.

Both Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal have created great cover-based action games with multiplayer modes, though it’s hard to imagine how the two teams will implement cover-based systems with a varied cast of superheroes. We can expect to hear more information in 2018.

Announced in January 2017, The Avengers Project is an action-packed game that will tell a “completely original story” that has “iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise.” The first and only trailer teases heroes such as Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America. Notably, in their FAQ on the matter, they state that it will introduce a universe that fans will be interested in for years, meaning that it will almost certainly not be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Square Enix has yet to announce platforms and a release window.
