Ark Survival Evolved full release delayed

Ark: Survival Evolved has had a rocky road to release, despite its popularity throughout early access. A legal dispute with Trendy Entertainment over their lead developer, controversy over splitting the game into two with Ark: Survival of the Fittest being a battle royal mode and then merging that back into the core game, and controversy over the release of an expansion while in early access, which led to the developers apologizing for calling player's cheap, is only a partial list of the controversies that the game has had to date. That road is going to get a bit longer though, as Ark: Survival Evolved's release has been delayed from August 8 to August 29 on all systems.

In a post on their site, Studio Wildcard explained the reason for the Ark: Survival Evolved delay has to do with the fact that it took extra time for them to lock down their gold master as they were working on certification for consoles that had to be done before they could print disks for retail release. The reason for not communicating this earlier was they were wanting to wait until they had a firm grasp on exactly how it was going to play out.

This does have other impacts as well, most notably on the PC version. Instead of receiving an update on August 8, the patch is being delayed for the full release of the game. The console release of the free Ragnarok DLC is also being delayed, but all versions will see that the update to it will increase the Ragnarok map size by around one-quarter, adding new biomes, a coastal Wyvern canyon, a new boss and more.

Beyond improving Ragnarok, the team plans to focus this month on PC performance, porting over many of the improvements made in the console versions of the game. Previously, the plan had been to work on PC performance post-release to improve it. Additionally, multiplayer issues are being targeted there with a few specific points singled out by Studio Wildcard. Multiplayer bosses, a baby dinosaur stasis issue, preventing people from being able to go under the map, DDoS mitigation, a duping exploit and more.

Ark: Survival Evolved will be released in full on August 29 for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4 for $59.99.

Quick Take

Ark has had a rough go at times in early access, being a game that has highlighted some of the issues surrounding the release method. The delay here though, appears to be a non-issue in general and it's nice that at least they are going to try and optimize the PC version some so that it's not essentially a beta build at best as it appears had been their plan on release.
