Apex Legends, the Titanfall game that no one asked for but everyone likes, recently reached another major milestone. According to Vince Zampella, the CEO of Respawn Entertainment, on Twitter, the sci-fi battle royale has a playerbase of 50 million people. This impressive achievement was reached only a month after the game was released. It is even more impressive when you consider how virtually no one knew about the game's existence until it came out. It should hardly be much of a surprise though, given that Apex hit the 10 million player milestone only three days after its surprise debut.

There is little doubt that Apex Legend's free to play nature contributed greatly to the game's enormous audience size. For comparison's sake, it took roughly four months for Player Unknown's Battlegrounds to sell one million copies. Fornite Battle Royale experienced much faster growth, but it still took roughly half a year to reach the 45 million person playerbase mark. Alternatively, one could take Apex Legend's success as a sign that the battle royale genre is no longer just a fad. Either way, a little competition is usually a good sign.

Of course, the fact that Apex Legends features some relatively unique gameplay elements doesn't hurt. After all, no other battle royale has such a robust in-game callout system. For that matter, very few, if any, other battle royale games can claim to be a hero based shooter as well. If the rumors are to be believed, Apex will also be getting a Survival mode in the near future alongside two new Legends, something that helps it stand out even more from the competition. With such a relatively high potential for expansion, Respawn and Electronic Arts definitely stumbled upon a goldmine.
