The wild popularity of Apex Legends is sure to draw in some unsavory people, and Respawn Entertainment has the numbers to back it up.

Since bolstering their anti-cheat and spamming initiative, Apex Legends developers Respawn Entertainment released some figures on how many people have been caught and banned so far. Respawn Community Manager Jay Frechette announced on Reddit that the total bans for players are now at 770 thousand.

An additional 300 thousand accounts were blocked during the creation process. Players banned in Apex Legends receive an IP ban. This means that this amount of people attempted to create a new account in order to play the game, but were stopped. As a result, the team has seen a significant reduction in cheaters on PC since going after cheaters and spammers.

Another issue, according to this post, are "cheat seller accounts," and thus far over 4000 of these accounts received bans.

Frechette says that the in-game report option was a big help in addressing this issue. Respawn and EA's security teams have worked together in order to improve the banning process. Frechette says:

While we can’t share details on what we’re doing so as to not give a head’s up to the cheat makers, what we can say is that we’re attacking this from every angle, from improvements to detecting cheaters, bolstering resources and tools, to improving processes and other sneaky things to combat sellers and cheaters.

Respawn and EA will continue to fight against cheaters, but so far it looks like they have made a lot of headway in tackling this issue.

Quick Take

When a game becomes so popular, it's hard to keep track of so many people. Inevitably, there will be those who take advantage of the situation. I'm really impressed with the progress made so far. I don't play Apex Legends on PC myself, but I can sympathize. I can't imagine the frustration of playing a game and being one of the last alive, only to lose because of a cheater.
