Rovio, the developer behind the once omnipresent mobile game Angry Birds has released a press release announcing the opening of a new studio based in the English capital of London. The release states that this new studio will be focussing on MMO games with new IP not related to the Angry Birds franchise.

Our business is profitably growing and London is the most logical place for us to found a new studio that will complement our overall global mix of internal and external developers. London is also a fantastically diverse talent magnet.

The London studio is the latest in a long line of studios started by Rovio. The developer already has in-house development studios in other countries like Sweden and its native Finland.

As far as the plans for the new studio, Head of Studio Mark Sorrell had this to say:

We believe that the best game experiences are those that you share with other people. So we’re starting a studio to do exactly this. We look forward to bringing a diverse team together to deliver unique MMOs that are creative, inclusive and delightful.
In the coming few years, the developer will be focussing on creating a twenty man team for the new studio, so the operation will be on a smaller scale for the time being. There's good news if you've been looking to get into the industry: Rovio is looking for people to fill spots on the new team. You can find a full list of all the open positions and their requirements by navigating here.

Rovio famously rose to the top of the then nascent mobile gaming industry, and have since gone on to expand the Angry Birds franchise's reach into different mediums like movies and merchandising. The franchise also spawned numerous offshoots of the main franchise, retooling the game to include familiar characters and scenes from other IP like Star Wars and Transformers.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
