Vagabond Dog has this week announced a free-to-play browser version of their role-playing game, Always Sometimes Monsters.

Entitled, Always Sometimes Monsters: Freeloader Edition, newcomers can play through its entirety without having to pay a single dime for it. Unfortunately, Freeloader Edition does not allow for players to import their saved data to the follow-up, Sometimes Always Monsters

Always Sometimes Monsters is a story about a failed author set on a journey to win back the love of their life. In it, players must work their way up from the bottom society, as they travel coast to coast to stop their former partner from marrying someone else. The title was released back in 2014 and was generally liked for its mature themes, compelling narrative and difficult choices.

Creative Director Justin Amirkhani told TechRaptor that sending out free versions of their game has been a consistent internal policy for Vagabond Dog. During the initial launch of Always Sometimes Monsters, Justin said that this policy first started with The Pirate Bay, and how one of the top-seeded torrents of the title was a particularly buggy version.

Realizing that there was no way to stop people from pirating it, the team decided to drop some free Steam keys and leave an email to those who would later come to pirate the game. To this day, Justin told us that his email inbox has never been the same.

The process has instilled a belief that art must be freely accessible, and that a grateful audience does pay tribute in time. Many of the freeloaders eventually bought copies of the game, for themselves or friends. Mostly, we hope some people who've never even heard of the game will get a chance to try it." Justin Amirkhani, Creative Director of Vagabond Dog

Always Sometimes Monsters can be purchased on Steam, GOG, iOS, Android, and Humble Bundle. The free-to-play browser version, Freeloader Edition, can be played here.

The sequel Sometimes Always Monsters is slated for release later in 2016.

Quick Take

I remember back in 2015 when I first played Always Sometimes Monsters. Though at times it did come across as a little dark; I felt that the way this title tackled moral choices was both very unique, and impactful.  Having played through ASM twice now, I'm incredibly eager to see where their sequel, Sometimes Always Monsters, takes me and my imported character.
