Ending their AnimeExpo 2016 panel, Aksys Games revealed a title completely out of left field that they're picking up for localization - Tokyo Xanadu! Fans of the games' developer, Nihon-Falcom, are probably scratching their heads right about now - especially since XSEED Games/Marvelous USA have been the ones to localize Falcom titles for the last few years, and the company has even stated on several occasions that they have first dibs on choosing to localize Falcom titles. Today's announcement isn't just surprising due to the company that actually picked the title up for localization, but also the addition of a PC release in the west. Besides releasing both physically and digitally on PlayStation Vita, the title is receiving a Steam release when it launches next year.

Tokyo Xanadu is an action-rpg that released in Japan last year, exclusively on PlayStation Vita. The title released to both rave reviews and great sales during its Japanese launch.

During the panel Aksys answered a few quick questions about the title before everyone was shooed out of the room; currently there's nothing to say regarding the title's recently announced PlayStation 4 port coming to the west, and whether the title will receive an English dub, the original Japanese audio, or both remains to be seen. As far as a more specific timeframe for when players can expect the title to release in the west, the company stated that players should probably expect the title in the first half of 2017.

Quick Take

Like I stated in the article, this announcement completely came out of left field. It's not surprising that the title is seeing a western release in general - besides the fact that the title did well in Japan and is receiving an enhanced PlayStation 4 port, Falcom themselves had expressed interest in bringing the title overseas. The various specifics surrounding the announcement are the things that stand out here. This is the first Nihon-Falcom title that Aksys is bringing to the west, and XSEED Games outright skipped on picking up the title themselves. It should be interesting learning more about the announcement as more specifics of the project come to light.
