After all of the horror surrounding Agony and its UNRATED Edition, developer Madmind Studio is jumping back into the fray with its new survival-horror title, Paranoid.

Though details are limited, we know Paranoid tells the story of one Patrick Calman, a middle-aged man who has lost his entire family. His parents deceased, Calman lives in their former apartment. Calman’s sister has been missing for 13 years, and he suffers from drug addiction and mental health issues as a result of these tragedies.

One day, Calman receives a call from that long-lost sister. She announces her return, pushing her brother’s fragile mind into insanity. The reveal forces Calman out into the world to deal with his trauma, leading into a “deep, psychological” story.

Key features of the game include:

  • A dynamic and brutal combat system
  • A constant struggle between paranoia and reality
  • Terrifying opponents
  • Drug abusing gameplay mechanics
  • A deep plot combining psychological horror with action and survival
  • A disturbing atmosphere that combines psychosis and surrealism
  • Realistic visual setting
  • Three endings depending on the style of the player's gameplay
  • Cinematic Cutscenes

Paranoid has no release date, but it has been in production “for some time now.” The game takes place in the late 80s, and is full of “frightening, hostile creatures.”

Finally, Madmind also shared news of Agony UNRATED’s success. The game beat out the original version, with UNRATED currently sitting at a “very positive” rating on Steam. That, and the revamped venture into Hell hit first place in the “New and Trending” category during its launch on Steam helped also by the fact that many users got it from having Agony.

Quick Take

Based on the trailer, Paranoid looks smoother than Agony ever was. First of all, this new title seems just as sexualized. I can only hope that content has more context this time around. Agony's usage was tasteless and genuinely affected my enjoyment of the game.

What do you think of Paranoid? Is it a worthy follow up to Agony or do you think the title might be able to deliver what Agony never did? Let us know in the comments below!
