Age of Wonders: Planetfall made an appearance at this year's PC Gaming Show at E3, with an August 6th release date in tow. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a 4X game where different factions are vying for control of a planet following the collapse of a galactic empire. Players will be able to explore the alien world and uncover ancient facilities with strange mutants and monsters inside. Pre-orders for the space-themed 4X game are live now which will net you an exclusive scenario planet and some cosmetics for your units. Age of Wonders: Planetfall is set to launch on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One on August 6th, and will retail for $49.99.

The next installment in the long-running Age of Wonders series, Planetfall moves the series off of its terrestrial origin out into space. Planetfall comes with six unique races, from the laser dinosaur-riding Amazons to cyborg-zombies of the Assembly. Each race will come with its own technologies and perks to further the differences between the competing factions. Different factions will be better at diplomacy, exploring, rescuing survivors, and naturally, combat. Developer Triumph Studios promises a deep single-player experience, as well as versus AI on random maps and multiplayer matches as well.

While moving away from the fantasy-heavy themes of recent Age of Wonders games may seem like an odd choice, there's been an impressive rush of 4X fantasy games as of late. Endless Legend got a massive expansion earlier this year, and while Armello may not be a true 4X game, as far as fantasy strategy games are concerned, it certainly stands out. Compare Age of Wonders: Planetfall with the thoroughly lackluster Civilization: Beyond Earth, and it's easy to see where Age of Wonders hopes to step in. We'll see if Planetfall is able to capture their share of the 4X market when it releases this August.
