Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition finally has a release date, along with some new details that will likely satisfy longtime fans of the real-time strategy series.

The Definitive Edition is a remaster of the classic Age of Empires II, one of the most popular real-time strategy games for the PC in the late 1990s. Now for its 20th anniversary, the game is getting the remaster treatment with some brand new features added into the package.

The biggest additions include a brand new campaign, ‘The Last Khans’, which will add three new campaigns and four new civilizations into the game, with several other quality of life improvements such as a graphical overhaul into 4K Ultra HD and a remastered soundtrack.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will also be supported through cross-network play between the Microsoft Store and Steam. Players who already own a copy of Age of Empires II (2013) (previously called Age of Empires II HD) on will be eligible to receive a 25% discount on Steam, and will be able to play players across both Steam and the Microsoft Store.

The first Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is also now available on Steam. A new client will be required to play with players on Steam, and all progress from the game will be carried over between platforms.

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition contains hundreds of hours of strategic gameplay, spanning 1,000 years of humanity with 35 different civilizations for players to play as. The game is scheduled for a November 14th, 2019 release date, and is available for pre-order now. Players can also sign up for a beta test of Age of Empire II at the games official website.

Quick Take

Age of Empires has always been one of the most popular and influential RTS games in history. It is great to see the first definitive edition be so successful because for my money, Age of Empires II was the best games in the series. It combined so many little details to make the various civilizations unique, I can’t tell you how many hours I spent playing through the game back in the day.

Personally, I am looking forward to Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, it is a great homecoming to one of the best RTS titles of all time.
