Titanfall was the gaming gem of yesteryear. Developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by EA, it seemed everyone was talking about it when it came out. It won over 60 awards at its E3 2013 reveal, including a record-breaking six E3 Critics Awards and “Best of Show” from several media outlets in addition to Gamescom and Tokyo Game Show awards. We even had our own thoughts on it at E3.
Earlier last year, Respawn announced they were working on a sequel to the mech-shooting game on October 28 of this year. The game will use the same engine but will only come out on current gen (Xbox One, PS4) consoles and PC.
Dualshockers, covered the information that Respawn Entertainment and GAME Digital will be partnering to host the multiplayer servers for the game. GAME Digital will be providing their Multiplay service to ensure that players have minimal lag during gameplay. This new service is apparently something “no game has used before” and is an entirely new service built exclusively for Titanfall 2 by Multiplay. Director of Digital Business at Multiplay, Paul Manuel, said the following about the partnership:
“Titanfall 2 is a significant win for our enterprise hosting division, and we are delighted to be working with the talented team at Respawn. We share their passion for innovation and our team at Multiplay are constantly pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved within game server hosting. Our platform combines high-power dedicated servers across the globe with the additional capability of automatically bursting into the leading cloud providers. This provides un-paralleled flexibility and fault tolerance that’s simply not achievable through a single Cloud provider.”
It was commonplace in the days when Titanfall was popular to see Reddit posts complaining about the lag when playing multiplayer. Players observed that even when the ping was low, they still experienced rubber banding, which rendered the game unplayable.That was mostly due in part to the servers running only on Azure. Now, the devs say, they will also be running on “bare metal” servers in datacenters in addition to Azure, Amazon servers, and Google Servers. They predict this will lead to higher stability and less lag than their last game. To ensure this, they will be running a “Multiplayer Tech Test” before launch to test out the new server arrangement. This set up is something new that Multiplay had to work with setting up.
Hopefully, with the partnership Respawn has gotten with GAME Digital and the whole new system they have made specifically for Titanfall 2, the issue of rubber banding and lag will be stamped out in the game’s sequel.
