A new exploit was found recently that shows that Nintendo may be holding back support of Gameboy Color games for the Virtual Console on the 3DS. The Virtual Console is a system that allows for games available for previous Nintendo consoles, such as the Gameboy and Gameboy advance, to be played on the 3DS, Wii, or WiiU.

Since the initial launch of the Virtual Console originally on the Wii and now on all current Nintendo devices users have complained about the slow release of titles. This complaint is usually accompanied by people asking “what the problem is when it’s just a ROM, do you really need to do that much to make it compatible with the Virtual Console?” The answer to that question has been answered with the exploit as any GBC rom can be run on the Virtual Console.

The way this process works is by placing the pirated Gameboy Color ROM and a custom created bin file into the root of an SD card in your 3DS, load up a Gameboy Color game in the Virtual Console, while resetting the game return to home, open up the browser and go to a website that will then run the bin code. After that it’s just a matter of resuming your Virtual Console game and you’ll be playing any Gameboy Color game you want in no time at all. There are some limitations to this system such as that it only works for Gameboy Color games, the file you are injecting can’t be larger than the Virtual Console game and that this will not work on the New Nintendo 3DS that is coming out this Friday. The save features of the games played using this injecting exploit are still enabled allowing you to put down and pick up the game from time to time without fear of losing your saved data, even the Virtual Consoles save states works though it will overwrite previous save states for that game.

If you want to see the process in action then you can watch the video below where The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX is used to inject Pokemon Yellow Version, a much requested Virtual Console title:

What do you think of this new exploit? What Gameboy Color game do you want to play on your 3DS? Should Nintendo be doing a better job of giving more Virtual Console games support across all platforms?

I have been playing all kinds of games for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in action adventure and platforming titles. While I am primarily an Xbox gamer I also spend a fair bit of time on the PS4 and on my PC in VR.
