The Nintendo Switch launched today and with it what appears to be the incredible The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. At some other publications you've probably read a lot about their impressions of the Switch and possibly a review of it as a sort of final say on what they feel about the new console. We don't have that yet, and let me tell you why.
The most obvious reason is that we did not receive a Nintendo Switch to review as a publication. There's no surprise there, as we are not at the level of reach Nintendo would be looking for to give out a review console for us to mess with. That means our staff's first time with the Switch will be the same time as all of you. Plenty waited in line, went out at midnight, and posted many a picture on social media once their Switch was at home.
And since we have not had any time with the Switch, don't expect our review of the console for some time. We'll very likely have reviews out of some of the Switch's launch titles before the review of the console itself, as our reviewer is going to make sure they spend a good amount of time with it to learn the ins and outs to give all of you the most accurate picture and evaluation as possible. I can't give a date on when that may be, but don't expect it for maybe even a couple of weeks. With that said, expect some sort of quick thoughts video or first impressions sooner than the review. And getting back to those games for a moment, since we did not receive a Switch to review ourselves, we obviously did not get review copies of the games either, so expect reviews on the launch date titles in the coming weeks as well.
Also, I would just like to take the opportunity to reiterate our philosophy when it comes to reviews: we would much rather have a review out later than other publications if it means the quality of the review will be greater. So we will take our time and are more than willing to do sacrifice timeliness for quality. Whether or not we receive a copy, or console, to review does not affect a review either.
