X-Wing Wave 5 Announced!

June 13, 2014

Today, Fantasy Flight Games announced the fifth wave of ships for the X-Wing miniatures line! With most of us waiting an actual date for wave four, this seems unexpected. In spite of this, it does add a lot of neat things to the game. As of right now, this wave consists of just two large ships: one for each side. For the Rebels, we see the YT-2400 slipping out of hyperspace and into the fight. The name of this ship might not ring any bells, but for anyone familiar with the game Shadows of the Empire it will make them

more than ecstatic to learn that this is none other than the model of Dash Rendar's ship, The Outrider. While not as bulky as it's YT-1300 cousin, it still boasts a turret weapon as well as the ability to barrel roll naturally. Among the included upgrades is the option to take Lando Calrissian as a crew member and the Outrider title, which turns any equipped cannon into a turret while sacrificing your primary weapon.

As exciting as it is to see Dash and his ship, the Imperials get something seemingly more out of left field than the X-wing wave 5 announcement itself; the VT-49 Decimator. This ship is massive even while sticking to the 1/270th scale and is the largest ship allowed for Standard Play. This is the first of any ship to have a turret and fly for the Imperials but also boasts a zero agility score, meaning it's not going to be dodging much of anything. But don't let the lack of defense dice fool you, because this behemoth is rocking 12 hull points and 4 shields, meaning your opponents will have to focus it and face the fury of your remaining fleet. On top of being an iconic ship from the beloved Star Wars Extended Universe, it also brings with it a wealth of new crew options including the Emperor's Hand Mara Jade!

While it currently seems that this wave is lacking in numbers, it also is bringing a new type of obstacle into play with the debris fields. What we know of them is purely aesthetic; featuring artwork of devastated starfighters and other bits of debris. Both of these large ships are also shaping to change the meta, which is one of my favorite things to see any wave do. The Decimator is simply too many points to support a swarm and the YT-2400 isn't nearly the straightforward beast that the 1300 is, but brings plenty of new tricks with it to the table. As of now, the fifth wave is scheduled to hit stores in Quarter 3 of 2014 which means it's likely to prerelease at GenCon this year. Go and switch on your targeting computers now, the wait isn't too far from here.
