This morning, the latest Nintendo Direct announced that Animal Crossing: New Leaf was getting a free update and will be included in a new packaged release as Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo in December.

The game will include Amiibo integration for the 16 Animal Crossing series figures. The figures will allow you to invite special guests into the game. Each of the guests has their own RV (for the newly announced RV park) where you can meet them on their day off. These characters also act as a vehicle for new content that gives players access to the games Desert Island Escape and Animal Crossing Puzzle League. Alternatively, you can acquire these items without purchasing any figurines through fortune cookies at the Nooklings' shop.

Activating Amiibo functionality is accomplished by finding the Magic Lamp in the game. Once you've found this item, you can tap it once per day to invite a character from a compatible figure into the game. You can see some of these gameplay elements in action in the Nintendo Direct trailer released today:

An RV campground has been added to the game. Included with the campground is a new character named Harvey. Aside from the guests from the game's Amiibos, you can also bring in characters from other select games such as the Inklings from Splatoon or Wolf Link from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. The RV campground will present new opportunities to interact with existing villagers as well as some new items you can pick up while shopping such as a tunic from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

There are plenty of new bits of content for players who don't have any Amiibos. As a start, you'll now be able to customize the layout of your home by using the 3DS' touch screen. You can also acquire a new storeroom for your house at Nook's Homes so you'll have a place to stash all of your collectibles. Players with save data from Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer can link it to unlock 20 giant furniture items for purchase in the game. MEOW (Mutual Exchange Of Wealth) coupons are a new currency that you can acquire by completing new daily or weekly Town Initiatives. These MEOW coupons will allow you to get your hands on unique in-game items.

Lastly, a new Camera mode will let you take selfies and save them. You'll also be able to share these images with your friends via the 3DS Image Share Tool. Speaking of cameras, take a peek at some screenshots from the game showcasing some of the new characters, features, Amiibo cards, and more!

This new update will also release as part of a package called Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo for players looking to get into the game for the first time. The package includes one random Amiibo card out of the 50 new ones being introduced for the game. The Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo package launches in December 2016.

What do you think of the new content added to Animal Crossing: New Leaf - Welcome Amiibo? If you don't yet own the game, will the newest additions announced in the latest Nintendo Direct convince you to pick it up? How do you feel about the integration of Amiibos and cards into the game?
