Today, March 4th, Gabe Newell and others from Valve held an AMA (Ask Me Anything, an interview of sorts) on Reddit. You can find the whole thread here. The focus of this will not be what did we learn about Gabe personally, but what information did we learn about Valve’s future intentions?
- The new Source 2 engine will focus greatly on making the development of user generated content much easier. That is not exactly a surprise, seeing as Valve has fostered an incredible community for user created content in their workshop, as well as creating an incentive to do so with their various shops in games like Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.
- Valve has been working on their own virtual reality hardware for two years, similar to the Oculus Rift. Gabe also says that Valve and Oculus Rift have been working together as well, saying “[we] want their hardware to be great.” We look forward to more news on this as early impressions of it seem glowing.
- There are plans to incorporate internet radio (e.g. Pandora) into the recently announced Steam Music.
- Valve is still working on lower cost Steam Machines made for streaming from hardware you already own. Essentially that means a machine will allow you to play a game from your PC on a TV or monitor in a different room.
