While Nintendo is focusing more on releases for their new NX console in 2017, things do continue to happen with their current systems, the Wii U, and the 3DS. A few new releases, Virtual Console releases, and back to school deals all have been announced in a couple of press releases that we're going over today.

First up are the headline Virtual Console releases for the Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS. On the Wii U you can add in N64 classic Wave Race 64 to the relatively sparse list of Nintendo 64 titles that have made their way to the Virtual Consoles. It is available for $9.99, or your regional equivalent right now, and thankfully supports all controllers for the system.

For the New Nintendo 3DS, we have another SNES title making its way to the Virtual Console, in Mega Man X.  This is the title that started the Mega Man X  line of games and was a very popular release back on the SNES being the continuation of the Mega Man brand. It is available in 2D only (no 3DS stereoscopic 3D), and runs for $7.99 US.

As for new games, you aren't looking at anything high-powered right now, and in fact not that much at all, with just a couple of ports. Tadpole Treble is an indie title by Bitfinity where you swim through sheet music of the songs in the game, attempt to avoid notes, hit beats and get your young tadpole home. There is even a composition mode in the game which you can use to make songs and share them if you dare. It goes for $9.99 right now on Wii U, and was released earlier this year on PC in Early Access.

The other port is Mario Sports Mix which was originally released on the Wii in 2010. In the game you can play four different sports - basketball, dodgeball, hockey, and volleyball - with characters from the Mushroom Kingdom or your own Mii. It will run you $19.99 right now on the Wii U eShop.

Now onto the part you've been waiting for, which is the new deals that are available, including several additions to the Nintendo Selects line. For those who don't know, Nintendo Selects is a marketing thing Nintendo does with lowering the price of some of their high profile games years after launch to a permanent price point of $19.99. This generally makes them a good value, especially given that Nintendo rarely puts their games on sale otherwise. These titles will officially join the Selects line on August 26th.

Here is the list of new Nintendo Selects titles:

  • Animal Crossing: New Leaf for Nintendo 3DS
  • Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for Nintendo 3DS
  • Tomodachi Life for Nintendo 3DS
  • nintendogs + cats: Golden Retriever & New Friends for Nintendo 3DS
  • Lego City Undercover: The Chase Begins for Nintendo 3DS
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD for Wii U
  • Nintendo Land for Wii U
  • Lego City Undercover for Wii U

For deals, we are going to start with a focus on the new Back to School specials here that Nintendo is advertising. The first one is for those who are interested in amiibo and games on the Wii U. These Wii U Game + amiibo bundles are priced at an MSRP of $39.99 and comes with the game and the amiibo. The amiibo's that come with the game do have functionality with that title. These will be available starting on September 9th.

  • Yoshi's Wooly World has two bundles, one with the Pink Yarn Yoshi and one with the Light Blue Yarn Yoshi.
  • Mario Party 10 also has 2 bundles, and your options here are either Peach or Bowser amiibos depending on which you prefer
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is the final one, and it comes with the Toad amiibo.

There are two separate handheld bundles available in the new back to school sale, with a high end one and a lower end one. On the high end, you have the Super Mario 3D Land Edition new Nintendo 3DS launching on August 26th, that comes with Super Mario 3D Land pre-installed, and two interchangeable Mario-themed cover plates (one inspired by Mario, and one featuring 8-bit classic Nintendo characters). This will be only available at Walmart and Target, and is the cheapest the New Nintendo 3DS has been, with a price of $149 MSRP. This is not the New Nintendo 3DS XL it is worth explicitly pointing out.

New 3DS Bundle

On the lower end, is a 2DS bundle available now with a lower price point. This one comes with Mario Kart 7 pre-installed and is available for a cheaper $79.99 MSRP.

While there are some specific titles on sale, like Stella Glow by Atlus or Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy, Nintendo doesn't make it particularly easy to find via their information but their website does have a list of some. The Phoenix Wright trilogy and Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies may be especially worth checking out ahead of the release of the next Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney game early next month.
