Edit:  For clarification, Terraria: Otherworld is not Terraria 2 they are separate titles.  Terraria: Otherworld is a spin-off, not a sequel.

Terraria: Otherworld previously referred to as simply "Terraria 2" has officially been announced by Re-Logic and Engine Software.  A pre-alpha trailer was released on YouTube recently, and even in just the pre-alpha stage the game looks pretty promising.  The pre-alpha footage shows the iconic and charming art designs of Terraria with a new darker twist on it to give the landscape an otherworldly feel.  The game will explore "what might have been" and "approach gameplay in a new direction".  Despite what some of the designs may look like, Terraria: Otherworld will not take place on a planet with alien life but in an alternate dimension within the Terraria universe.  Despite being an alternate universe, the trailer shows that many aspects of Terraria will be making a grand return in Terraria: Otherworld.  Development information will be available at GDC, booth #2230, in San Fransisco as well as on the Terraria: Otherworld website.

In the Terraria: Otherworld universe, the world of Terraria has been overrun by a malevolent force that has ravaged the landscape you once called 'home'.  Players will be able to play with friends in a sandbox or rock it out solo, using armor, weapons, and magic to combat the evil that has corrupted their world.  The dark force has corrupted nature itself, and it's up to the player and other survivors to defeat the forces of evil and return this world to its former state of balance and beauty.

Though much has not been revealed about the game, it's definitely one to look out for.  Terraria: Overworld brings a fresh, new design to the popular open world sandbox action-RPG and looks like a promising installment expanding on the world of Terraria.  More information will becoming in March during GDC, but make sure you check out the official website for the game, if you're interested.
