The sequel to the well-loved tower defense game, Q-Games' PixelJunk Monsters 2 will be coming worldwide to the PS4, Switch and Steam on May 25th. The first official PixelJunk game since 2012's PixelJunk 4am, and first game in the series since Nom Nom Galaxy, Monsters 2 marks a return to the exploits of Tikiman, as he attemps to defend his Tiki Hut from hordes of monsters. The sequel also marks a move from the two-dimensional realm into the world of glorious 3D. PixelJunk Monsters will release digitally only at $14.99 USD for PS4, Switch, and on PC on May 25th.

Boasting vastly improved graphics over the original, PixelJunk Monsters 2 is hoping to be an improvement in more ways than one. You can seamlessly toggle between a top-down or close-up view, and can now play four-player co-op online. The close-up view is more for viewing the detail of your character, as it's rather difficult to play the game with such a close camera angle. Couch co-op is making a return as well, which was easily part of what made the original so memorable. Kotaku reports that in addition to PixelJunk Monsters 2 looking better than ever, it will support 60 FPS on the PS4, and 30 FPS on the Switch.

The PixelJunk series has covered a wide range of genres. From the gorgeous platformer PixelJunk Eden to the sidescrolling action of PixelJunk ShooterQ-Games has clearly never felt at home in any one genre. Unifying all the games is a family-friendly attitude, and a knack for pushing boundaries. Technically, the PixelJunk series is still on its first iteration, with most of the first series of games typically taking place in the 2D realm. For a deeper look at the gameplay of PixelJunk Monsters 2, Q-Games' head Dylan Cuthbert will be presenting it on Twitch tonight, alongside the other games announced by Spike Chunsoft at GDC this year.
