The official Killer Instinct twitter account has confirmed that a compilation of Seasons One through Three of Killer Instinct (2013) is set for release later this year. Titled Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition, the title will contain all twenty-six characters and twenty stages from all three seasons of Killer Instinct (2013) - including those that have yet to be released. Additionally, it will contain the first two games in the Killer Instinct franchise, Killer Instinct (1994) and Killer Instinct 2. The trailer for Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition can be viewed below.

In addition to the game itself, those who purchase Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition will receive an Original Soundtrack CD, and a Gold Gargos skin pack.

Killer Instinct: Definitive Edition is set to release September 20, 2016, for the Xbox One console, and will be published by Microsoft Studios. A retail price of $39.99 has been set for the game.  Both GameStop and Amazon have pages up for the game, but neither features the ability to purchase it just yet (and Amazon's page lists an incorrect release date of August 30, 2016).

Quick Take

Arcade gaming was a little before my era (I was three when the first Killer Instinct title was released), so I never really got to play Killer Instinct the way it should properly be played - frantically jamming quarters in for game continues, trying to beat whoever set the high score, figuring out how to unlock secret characters. That said, this compilation title looks very interesting and, depending on whether there will be a Season Four for Killer Instinct (2013) might be something I'll pick up. It's really sad that the franchise went so long (17 years!) without receiving any new titles. Especially since the franchise has had such a tremendous impact on the fighting game genre, in the same way that Street Fighter and King of Fighters have.
