Earlier this week at Microsofts Gamescom 2015 Press Briefing it was announced that one of the new features that will be coming to the Xbox One in the upcoming months would be the ability to use the Xbox One as a DVR. Since that announcement while discussing the upcoming dashboard redesign for the Xbox One Project Lead Richard Irving has revealed though that the DVR will not save footage to the internal hard drive and will instead require an external hard drive.

You need an external hard-drive specifically for DVR because we want to keep the [storage] paths optimized between playing games and watching TV," he said. "We don't want them to interact with each other.
This means that to watch live TV already requires the purchase of the digital TV tuner, that is currently available in North America and Europe, and now for the DVR functionality you will need another device on top of that. This recording of live TV is meant to save in 1080i quality and has also been revealed that you can transfer them to Windows 10 devices so that you can continue to watch your shows while away from your Xbox One.

Interestingly enough also at Gamescom Microsoft has announced that they are partnering with Seagate to produce a hard drive that is made specifically for the Xbox One and Xbox 360. This hard drive will be 2TB in terms of storage space and will work straight of the box.

Do you think it's smart that you'll be keeping games and TV separate? For those who are already using an external for games do you really want a second attached? Are there any external hard drives that you would recommend?
