The Escapists

The Escapists, an 8 bit prison escape strategy game by Mouldy Toof Studios, has officially been released on the Playstation 4. In this game, the player takes up the role of a prisoner in a number of different jails, each with their own themes.

Each prison is unique and with it's own guards, layouts, schedules, etc. Things like the amount of free time and what weapons the guards have help determine the difficulty of the map. The Escapists places the player into one of these prisons and gives them one goal: escape. The player must learn the prison, discover its weaknesses, create a plan and execute it.

In order to execute an escape plan, the player must gather all of the required tools. These range from fence cutters and shovels to uniforms and fake keys. In order to do this, the player must purchase or loot base items off of other inmates and craft them into tools. This system forces the player into interacting with other prisoners, because the prisoner who is selling items changes and how much they like you changes how much they charge you for items.

The Escapists is a game about routine. The player must follow the schedule of the day, using periods of down time to scope out the prison and learn its weaknesses. They must do menial jobs in order to earn enough money to purchase items and work out or study in order to upgrade their stats. The game is about biding your time, keeping your head down until all of the pieces are in place, and then executing your escape.

The PS4 release of The Escapists and the Alcatraz DLC was on the 29th of May for the UK and the 2nd of June for the US. The main game currently costs $19.99 and the DLC costs $2.99.
