Bungie has announced that Destiny: Rise of Iron will only be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which means that they are leaving the Legacy consoles, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, behind.

In an article on the official Destiny website, Bungie explains that for those currently using a 'Legacy' console they will be unable to play Destiny: Rise of Iron unless they upgrade their console.

As seen in the above photo, by August 2016 Bungie is planning to split the two factions apart into separate realms - with the Legacy consoles being placed in a realm that will no longer enjoy content updates. Bungie is quite clear on this, stating that while their goal is to "... bring every player... along for the ride as we continue the story of Destiny... this summer [the] experience will fork onto two separate paths that will no longer share progression."

While Destiny players on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 will no longer be able to progress with the major new story content of Destiny, Bungie will continue to support players who 'elect' to stay on their current platform. This support will take the form of Heroic Missions and Strikes, Daily and Weekly Crucible Challenges, Raids and Boss Challenges, Prison of Elders and Challenge of Elders, Armsday Orders and Test Weapons, and Xûr, Agent of the Nine. The events that will no longer be available for Destiny will include Trials of Osiris, Iron Banner, and Live Events. It is also important to note that the Daily Heroic Mission (and others) will 'occasionally' be different on Legacy consoles compared to what will be available on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

For those that are interested in importing a player from their Legacy console to a current generation console, Bungie has included a guide so that players will be able to do so... with some caveats.

For players wishing to upgrade to the next generation of consoles, they will have to upgrade within the same 'console family', meaning that Xbox 360 players will have to upgrade to the Xbox One, and PlayStation 3 players will have to upgrade to the PlayStation 4. Players wishing to upgrade will have to use the same PSN ID or Xbox Gamertag as they did on their PS3 or Xbox 360 consoles, and they will have to perform the 'Account Import' by the beginning of August 2016. And finally, for those who upgrade they "may need to re-purchase some Destiny content for the new console." This content looks to be The Taken King, which Bungie notes will 'not be available' through their Digital Upgrade Program.

What will also not be available are the 'majority' of ways that players can purchase Silver on the Legacy consoles, as players will no longer be able to buy Silver via the in-game "Buy Silver" button in Eververse Trading Co., the PlayStation 3 silver Add-Ons from the PSN store on consoles or web browsers, and the Xbox 360 Silver Add-Ons from the Xbox Marketplace on consoles or web browsers. Players will also not be able to access the Destiny Demo on legacy consoles, with the Demo being removed from the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace on June 23rd for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Those who have previously downloaded the Demo will receive a "Destiny Servers Online" message when attempting to play the Destiny Demo.

And finally, Legacy players will be able to see 'some Character data' via the Destiny's Companion App, although Bungie notes that 'some' of the data "... will not display properly for Legacy Console players."
