In 2015 a Kickstarter went up for a game called Sacred Agony that was massively unsuccessful, only raising about 3,000 of a 544,000 goal. It seems that the game is getting one more shot, as it is back from the dead with a shorter name and no Kickstarter.

Agony is a first-person survival horror game developed by new Polish company Madmind Studios. The game sees you playing as a tortured soul who is stuck in Hell and is trying to escape. To do so he must possess various creatures in the underworld, including the human Martyrs in hell, and some of the weaker demons. Martyrs are weak and must mostly hide and avoid demons, while the demons will be able to participate in combat and eat hearts to survive events that should kill them.

When the Kickstarter originally went up it promised the ability to control three different creatures, and the ability to upgrade and improve the creatures as you play. The game's story involves a man finding themselves in Hell with no memory how they got there. His goal is to escape and to do so he has to meet with the mysterious Red Goddess to do so.

Unfortunately details are still light on the game. Some gameplay videos feature a possessed demon wandering around, with an occasional minigame for the player to retake control of it. The video ends with a human stabbing the demon with a spear, causing it to go into a fury and kill a bunch of other humans watching.

Agony is currently coming to the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC sometime in 2017. There's no price point as of yet.

Quick Take:

While I wonder how such a massive Kickstarter failure managed to get the funds together to keep going, I'm quite happy to see it. Agony seems to be a unique game and I'm a sucker for its crazy art style. Here's hoping that Madmind Studios manages to deliver on its promises. Just hopefully next time they show the game they can tell us a little more about how it plays.
