Mobile Review – Fist of Awesome

Fist of Awesome is a new game out by I Fight Bears that follows the legacy of games like Final Fight, Streets of Rages, and Double Dragon. Will they be able to being the fun and nostalgia to the mobile touchscreen? Keep reading to find out.

Fist of Awesome is a time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up of epic proportions. Tim Burr is a man out of time, caught up in a needlessly convoluted plot to enslave humanity by populating history with homicidal wild animals. Make sense? Nope. Good. That’s the best part. You just need to know, it’s awesome.

Gameplay

Fist of Awesome uses a very simple control scheme that it teaches you through the first two levels. The controls are mapped to two floating sections on each side of the screen. On the left you have your movement, on the right is actions. The controls are very smooth. It responded very well with my sausage lumps of thumbs and had no problem with the controls losing them.

You play the game in two different forms. There is the Story mode and Arena mode. They story mode is just that, and we will get to that later. The Arena mode is a timed Battle Royale against each creature in each area, which corresponds to the levels of the game. There are certain things that you can try to do during each battle to increase your time for that battle. Some are easy, some are near impossible. All of them are fun. You gain experience during the arena battles that help improve your character.

Leveling up your character is a very nice feature. You have four different categories to level up. Each one feels like a real powering up as well. When you increase your speed, you hit faster. It’s not just lip service. It makes you want to play over and over to keep leveling up. The cool feature is that even if you lose, you still get your experience for that level so you level up even if you fail.

The fighters in the game were nicely balanced. The only issue I had was sometimes they were very easy, other times their mob mentality makes it impossible to get through.

Graphics

Keeping with the nostalgia, Fist of Awesome keeps the with the retro-style graphics and it looks nice. You can make out the creatures when they are coming at ya. The HUD keeps it retro with each character having a health bar. The animations were fluid and didn’t stagger, regardless of how many characters were on the screen. Only issue that I came across is when there were a lot of creatures they did seem to blur together and I would miss my hits. I also noticed on some levels that limited where you can go, those limitations didn’t count for the enemies. They were walking on walls and right over me to try and trap me.

Audio

Do not for any reason at all play this game at the start on mute. You will miss one of the best parts of the game. The effects are voice acted. Yes, voice acted. And they are awesome. Also you must watch the credits and listen to the song. I’m still laughing at its awesomeness.

Story

The story is about Tim traveling through time, fighting bears and deer to restore humanity in the altered times. The story is as funny as the sound effects. If you read through it, it actually makes sense but there are a lot of inside jokes I felt. It was a little distracting, but eventually you will laugh a little and go kick some bear ass.

Fist of Awesome lives up to its name and price. As a fan of the retro games, this was really smooth and was addicting. I had problems putting it down. The replay on this game is good, even if it is the same game over and over. The Arena mode helps break up the monotony and leveling up your guy makes it even better.

Fist of Awesome is available on both iTunes and Google Play for $3.99.
